Choir Director Job Posting


Nature of the Position

The Choir Director is responsible for planning and implementing the music program for the Chancel choir, the Junior choir and parish Praise Team (ensemble choir). The Choir Director is responsible to the rector, and works with him or her to use music to enhance the worship experience and joy of the congregation and choir participants. Seasonal music plans (twice yearly) will be presented and agreed to with the Rector. Reflective of the rich choral tradition of the Church, input from the congregation and choir participants is always welcome.

Special attention is paid to the church calendar and the liturgy and heritage of the Anglican Church. The incumbent will teach choral skill, techniques and theory commensurate with the type of music to be presented and the skill and ability of the choir participants. Specific responsibilities include the direction of choirs at the weekly Sunday services, weekly rehearsals with each choir September to May, and special music presentations and services at Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter. Volunteer opportunities exist, including working with the Parish Bell Choir, The Walk to Bethlehem Program, half day teaching programs at the church on All Saints Day and Ash Wednesday and choir festivals and special activities.

Time Requirement/Hours of Work

In addition to attendance at the weekly Sunday 10:00 am service throughout the year, it is expected that weekly rehearsal time will be required September through May for each of the 3 choirs. Twice a year, approximately 40 hours of Seasonal Preparation to plan, select, order if required, prepare and organize seasonal music for the three choirs. Weekly Preparation time will also be expected preparing for each week’s program. Attendance at seasonal special services and presentations is required. On average, it is expected that 8.5 hours a week will be required.


Outline of Responsibilities
  • The Chancel Choir sings 1 to 2 anthems a month at the 10:00 am service. The Junior Choir sings anthems 3 times in each of the Fall and Winter seasons. The Praise Team sings primarily during communion and will learn new material on a regular basis.
  • Direct the choirs at the 10 a.m. service on Sundays and on other occasions, especially at the major festivals of the church year.
  • Working in conjunction with the organist and clergy, select praise songs and rehearse weekly hymns.


Skills and Experience
  • Experience and familiarity with the music of the Anglican service would be an asset.
  • Good conducting skills
  • Good teaching skills
  • Good leadership skills and the ability to work with a range of ages from 6 and on.
  • A positive and respectful attitude, open to others and supportive of individual needs.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of church music and the ability to select music supportive of the liturgy, church calendar, Christian teachings and the appropriate choir.
  • Ability to work with the Corporation and choir members in a team environment
  • Good organizational skills and the ability to plan ahead


Screening Requirements
  • References from previous positions and character references.
  • Interview with Selection Committee.
  • Agreement to the Grace Church Code of Conduct for Interpersonal Relationships and to terms and conditions of the job description.
  • Satisfactory and current police check and vulnerable sector screening.
  • Be a baptized Christian.
